From, Carl Coe's work on the COE family: Joseph Coe the elder was born November 2, 1820, at Coe's Station, Allegheny County, PA, son of Elder Benjamin and Nancy (Shields) Coe. He married (1) May 6, 1847, in Scott County, IA, Elizabeth M. Jack. She died later that year and he married (2) Catherine Moyer, born February 22, 1833, died February 15, 1898, in Scott County, IA. A farmer and elder in the Presbyterian church, he died September 24, 1901, in Scott County. His will, which was probated November 12, 1873, named his children Joseph, Benjamin, John S., Rebecca, Margaret, Eliza, and Sarah. From History of Scott County, Iowa 1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co.: Joseph Coe, farmer and stock-raiser, postoffice, Le Claire, was born in Allegheny Co. Pa., on the 2d of November, 1820, son of Benjamin and Nancy (Shields) Coe. They were natives of Pennsylvania, and married there about 1814, where 10 children were born, eight of whom lived to be adults, viz.: Rebecca, Margaret, Joseph, Benjamin, Eliza J., John, James, Sarah, Mary died in infancy. Mr. Coe was a farmer and stock-raiser and died in 1873, in Allegheny County. Mother died in 1862. The subject of this sketch was raised on a farm and received a limited education. When 26 years of age he left his father's home, came out and located in Scott Co., Iowa, in the year of 1846. The following spring he purchased 160 acres of wild land, and commenced to make a farm. In May, 1847, married Elizabeth Jack, a daughter of James Jack, one of the early settlers of Scott County. She was born in Pennsylvania; she died in 1848. On Aug. 24, 1854, married Catherine Moyer, a daughter of John Moyer. The fruit of this marriage is four children, viz.: Benjamin F., Sarah J. (now the wife of Mathew Wilson) John A. and Joseph C. In politics is a Republican. Mr. and Mrs. Coe are members of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Coe came to the county in limited circumstances, with $350 ready money, but by good management has accumulated a fine property and is one of the prosperous farmers of the county. He has 398 acres of land in Scott County, valued at $55 per acre; also has 400 acres of land in Jasper Co., Ia, valued at $40 per acre.
