Benjamin Coe [sr.] came from Long Island with is widowed mother prior to 1782 and died December 21st 1788, aged 86 years. He left children: 1. Benjamin; 2. Mary, wife of Moses Roberts; 3. Sarah, wife of David Tuttle; 4. Eunice, wife of Joseph Baldwin; and 5. Abigail, wife of Daniel Tichenor. His first wife, Abigail, died December 4 1761, aged 59 years; his second wife, Rachel, died August 12 1779, aged 70 years. Being too old for active service himself, Benjamin Coe furnished a substitute, in the person of an able-bodied negro slave, Cudjo, who was rewarded by his master with the gift of his freedom and an acre of land. Mr. Coe's house was at the southwest corner of Washington and Court Streets. |

Benjamin and Margaret Biegle Coe family history
Courtesy of Carl Robert Coe and his extensive research on the Coe family of Maryland and Virginia (as well as this Pennsylvania branch):
The earliest record of this Coe family is the 1800 census of Allegheny County, PA. That year Joseph6 Coe (Benjamin5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, Benjamin2, Robert1) is listed as a sixteen to twenty-six-year-old male, with a young wife and an infant son, on page 144 of the enumeration. From there it appears that Joseph went to Mason County, KY. He was a river man and was captain of a steamboat on the Ohio and other rivers for many years, in which capacity he became well known, while his social nature and genuine worth made him popular. He was an early settler in Indiana. It is likely that he died before 1828. [Capt. B.B. Paddock, A Twentieth Century History and Biographical Record of North and West Texas (Chicago and New York: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1906), 2:16-19]
There was one Coe family living in Allegheny County at the time Joseph Coe appears there. The family of Benjamin and Margaret (Biegle) Coe moved there from Morristown, NJ, in the 1770s. They were married March 26, 1775. Benjamin Coe died at Coe's Station, Allegheny County, March 3, 1833. He left a will that named some of his children. He appears on the same page of the census as Joseph Coe. Benjamin Coe and his family appear in the Depreciation Tract of Allegheny County in 1790. Listed with four sons under sixteen and three daughters, the family history, which is incomplete, lists only sons Daniel and Moses Coe born prior to the census. The Depreciation Lands District was bounded to the south and east by the Allegheny River, to the north by an east-west line, drawn due west from the junction of Mahoning Creek with the Allegheny River, and to the west by the Pennsylvania border. Just 37 families are listed there that year. Neighbors were Alexander Logan, Ezekiel Day and Daniel Howe.
Benjamin and Margaret (Biegle) Coe were the parents of the notable Rev. Dr. James Coe DD, born July 3, 1790, at Coe's Station. Dr. Coe settled in Mason County, KY. He married March 3, 1819, in Fleming County, KY, Elizabeth Todd, reportedly a cousin of Mary Todd who married Abraham Lincoln. Deeds of James Coe were recorded across the Ohio River in West Union, OH. On July 5, 1819, he purchased Lot 25 from Peter Shultz for $920. "James Coe & wife Elizabeth" sold the lot to Peter Minick and Charles Emory, "In presence of Benjamin Coe and Thomas Irwin."
Benjamin Coe, who was baptized at Morristown, NJ, November 6, 1748, served under his brother Moses Coe during the American Revolution. Moses and his wife Sarah Howell are the ancestors of US President George W. Bush.
Benjamin Coe's will is dated May 3, 1828. With both a brother and an uncle named Joseph, he was a son of Benjamin and Rachel (Pruden) Coe of Morristown, NJ. The elder Benjamin Coe was born about 1709 at Jamaica, Long Island, NY, and moved to Westmoreland County, PA, in 1777. This was the only Coe family known to live in Western Pennsylvania during that period.
Captain Joseph Coe married Sarah ?Riggs, born 1776 in Pennsylvania. On May 11, 1829, Sarah Coe obtained 80 acres of land in Vermilion County, IL. This land was incorporated into Champaign County in 1833. Later records show that the family had been in Kentucky. Sarah's cabin in Somer Township served as a boarding house for travelers on the old Fort Clark Road. Across the road lived Philip Stanford and his family. She appears in the 1830 census of Vermilion County. She moved to Henry County, MO, in 1839 and appears in the census there in 1840. |
