Indiana General Assembly created Shelby Co, DEC 1821 and during the first meeting of the Board of Commissioners, the county was divided into four townships: Hendricks, Marion, Noble and Union. In 1840,they added: Addison, Hanover, Jackson, Liberty,Moral and Sugar Creek, followed in 1841 by VanBuren and 1843 by Brandywine. From the History of Noble Twp, Shelby Co, IN: The late William Major, father of Squier Major, our present County Superintendent of Public Instruction, settled here in 1830, and was to the day of his death, in 1877, a man that commanded univeral respect and confidence. he was born December 24,1807, in County Longford, Ireland; was married to Eliza, daughter of Alexander VanPelt, July 8, 1836; elected Justice of the Peace in 1837; served in that office sixteen years, was Township Trustee a number of times, and was a member of the State Legislature three times --- in 1847, 1852 and in 1856.

HE WAS GIVEN A LAND GRANT TO LIVE IN IOWA. SUSANNA BENTLEY MAJOR DIED IN ALLEN, WARREN COUNTY, IOWA. SHE DIED GIVING BIRTH ON MARCH 13,1860. I KNOW THAT MY GG GRANDFATHER MARRIED 2 OR 3 MORE TIMES. HE AND HIS WIVES ARE BURRIED TOGETHER IN WARREN COUNTY. SUSANNA AND WILLIAM HAD 6 CHILDREN. #1. THOMAS EMITT b.JULY 10,1850. #2. WILLIAM G.JR. b.SEPT.15,1852, #3.
