Note: Merton Louis Root III died Sept. 25, 2002 in Auburn at the age of 80 of complications from pneumonia. The Grass Valley resident was born Aug. 13, 1922 in San Jose. He was in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, serving in the 11th and 17th Airborne Divisions as a paratrooper and instructor during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan during the post-war occupation. He graduated from San Jose State University in 1948 and earned his DPM in 1952 from California College of Chiropody (Podiatric Medicine). He was married to Roberta J. Bryant on June 19, 1948 and subsequently to Elaine J. Ellsworth on Jan. 3, 1978. Dr. Root became a world-renowned podiatrist, discovering and classifying 26 different foot abnormalities. He developed functional orthosis to treat abnormalities of the foot. He maintained a private practice in San Jose while teaching at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco. He authored three podiatric textbooks and lectured extensively throughout the country. He was a strong advocate of non-surgical treatment of the foot. His theories of foot function and treatment have enabled podiatrists and other health care professionals to reduce pain and suffering to improve the quality of life for their patients. Dr. Root enjoyed reading, fishing, telling a good story and recreational gambling in Reno. He is survived by Elaine, his wife of 24 years; daughter Sharon Root of San Francisco; son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Cathy Root of Colfax; grandsons Brian and Gary; stepson Scott Ellsworth; sister and brother-in-law Marion and Lee Marsh of Pebble Beach and former wife Roberta Lisinski of Roseville. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Sunford of Portland, Ore. Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society. The family will be scattering the ashes in the Pacific Ocean in a private service. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Parkside Church of the Nazarene, 3885 Richardson Drive in Auburn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
