That is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body at the discretion of my executors. Nothing doubting that at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as standing such worldly goods and estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me within this life, I give and devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. First - I will that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid by my executors. Secondly - I will and bequeath that my beloved Elizabeth all the goods and property remaining that she possessed with on the day of our marriage, which was our marriage contract and was ratified and confirmed by each of us in writing previous to our marriage. And further I give unto her one feather bed and furniture therewith belonging. During her natural life and at her decease, the bed is to go to the use of my children hereafter mentioned to each an equal share, and further that she is to have her maintenance out of my estate and on the premises whereon I now live if she should so choose for and during her widowhood and if she should never marry during her natural life but if she does not see cause to continue on the principles she shall be at liberty to remove to any place she sees cause and my executors are still to grant for her out of my estate a respectable and sufficient support for the term or terms above mentioned and in her making application for the same. Thirdly - I will that all my slaves and stock of horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, together with my household goods and furniture, and all utensils for husbandry, be sold at public sale, and the money arising from the sale together with all the money in hand at my death, and all money due to me at this time or may come due to my estate hereafter be divided into seven equal shares and my two sons namely John and Benjamin Riddle is to receive and enjoy three equal parts out of seven for themselves, and their heirs forever, and the other four remaining parts is to be paid by my executors to my other four children namely Stephen Riddle, Elizabeth Elrod, Sarah Elrod, and Ann Ellis to each an equal part for themselves and their heirs forever. And their shares to be paid as soon as may be convenient after the money is collected belonging to my estate. Fourthly - I will unto my two sons John and Benjamin the tract of land whereon I now live with all the improvements and appurtenance thereunto belonging and the land to be divided equally in quality between them both by three men whom they appoint, to them and their heirs forever, and the lower end of the tract is added for Benjamin. Fifthly - I will that my two sons John and Benjamin my intended executors shall defray all costs and charges that shall or may arise in adjusting the affairs relative to the management of my estate as their own expenses and the estate is not to be considered as being responsible for any fees or costs that may arise from any suit or suits whatever that may be commenced by my executors against any person or persons in behalf of my estate, and further my two sons John and Benjamin is to pay out of their own legacy left to them to my other children above mentioned namely, Stephen Riddle, Elizabeth Elrod, Sarah Elrod, and Ann Ellis or to their heirs the sum of forty dollars to each of the four above mentioned legatees, or at the distribution of the shares of the estate. Sixthly - I will unto my daughter Mary Markland ten shillings currency. Seven - I will unto my two grandchildren David Riddle and Jonathan Riddle, sons of my own son Stephen riddle, the tract of land whereon my son Stephen Riddle now lives lying and being in Stokes County and in the state foresaid, but they are not to be invested with a right or title until both boys become of age.
